HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM OUR FILTER SYSTEMS CHARTS
The figures given in our Filter Systems Charts have been produced by the manufacturer, Oase, and are provided as a guide to selecting the best system for your pond. When selecting your filter system you should consider the following: -
Pond Volume - all our figures are metric, to convert gallons to litres multiply by 4.54
e.g. 1500 gallons x 4.54 = 6810 litres.
Other useful information
220 gallons = 1000 litres = 1 cubic metre
Fish Stock - again, our figures are in metric, to convert lbs to kg multiply by 0.45
e.g. 10 lbs x 0.45 = 4.5 kgs
Other useful information: 1 kg = 2.2 lbs
We have produced three charts, each with different levels of fish stock
-
No fish (e.g. ornamental ponds)
-
1 kg of fish per 1000 litres (= 1 lb of fish per 100 gallons) Average Fish Stock
-
3 kg of fish per 1000 litres (= 3 lb of fish per 100 gallons) Koi or high fish stock
Note, these are the maximum fish stock recommended for the filter systems in the charts, so if you estimate your fish stock to be say 2 kg per 1000 litres you would select for double the pond size from our 1kg per 1000 litre chart.
Weather/Location/Ambient Temperature
The performance of the filter system will be affected by the weather, location and ambient temperature. Our recommendations assume that the filter will be operating, during Summer months, in continuous dry weather; in direct sunlight and in high temperatures (typically in Southern England).
So if, for example, your pond is located in a shady, sheltered spot in Newcastle, where you might expect temperatures to be a few degrees lower than Southern England, you could probably use a smaller filter system.
Alternatively, if your pond is in the Algarve, Southern Portugal, you could expect to need a larger than recommended filter system.
Maintenance/Cleaning Interval
If you select the recommended filter system from our charts you will achieve crystal clear water (Oase guarantees this) and can be assured that it will require the minimum amount of maintenance. If you select a smaller filter system than the one we recommend, you can probably still expect to achieve crystal clear water, however the filter would require cleaning more frequently.

Filter Accessories
Lastly, you may require some additional items to complete your installation. You will probably require some hose and fittings to connect the pump to the UVC/Filter. These are available from our Accessories page. Please note, we always recommend you use the maximum diameter hose to minimize friction losses and to ensure maximum flow through your filter. In the case of Aquamax pumps this is 1 ½ inch or 2 inch for the Promax pumps.
If your filter is located away from the pond edge you will need to extend the discharge pipe. Biotec discharge pipes and bends are available from our Filter Accessories page.
If you require electrical equipment to extend your power supply to the pond or would like remote controls, try our Power Management section.
If you are in any doubt about additional equipment you may need, just send us an e-mail with your enquiry and we would be pleased to assist.
