Guidance Notes:
- A gravity pond filter must have its outlet mounted above the pond water surface; it can be mounted away from the pond, by extending the outlet with biotec discharge pipes, but raising it to a higher position (e.g. top of a watercourse/waterfall) could significantly reduce the flow rate from the pump and thereby the filter performance. For example, when using an Aquamax Eco 8000 pump, by raising the filter by 1 metre could halve its flow rate and therefore the size of pond the filter set is suitable for.
- If you want to have clean, filtered water discharged directly up to a watercourse/waterfall you should consider Pressurised Filter Sets see below.
- Gravity filters are generally more efficient than pressurised filters as they have a greater area of filter media (e.g. Foams) where friendly bacteria can flourish and support the biological action of the filter, thereby improving filtration performance and reducing maintenance. In addition, a Gravity Filter generally requires a smaller pump than an equivalent Pressurised Filter (a Gravity Filter pump will force water into the filter, but uses gravity to return the clean water back to the pond), therefore achieving savings on energy consumption compared to a pressurised system.
