Problem
Unwell and dead fish, Milky-cloudy water
|
What has happened?
Often pond owners complain about unwell fish shortly after a new pond has been built. In the first few weeks of a pond's life it has not yet biologically fully established itself. That means plants and micro-organisms cannot cope with all the toxic substances because they take at least 4 weeks to be able to do so.
What can happen?
The worst case scenario: The pond 'dies' and with it all the living organisms in it.
What has to be done?
First of all it needs to be established whether nitrite is the cause. The presence of nitrite as well as ammonia proves that the vital biological processes have not yet or only partly started. The nitrite test in the OASE aqua activ "Test Set" allows the customer to determine in minutes in his own home whether the water is ready to cope with fish. In any case new ponds (and also old ponds which have been refilled with fresh water) should be immunised with OASE aqua activ "Starter Bacteria" from the OASE pond treatment range. This speeds up the biological processes and the level of nitrite will cease to be dangerous.
The question, when fish can be introduced to the pond is hereby answered: Only once the nitrite level is not dangerous anymore. Of course the pH-value should also be in the optimal range between 7.5 and 8.6. In case of the pH-value being well above 9.0 already "pH-value Minus" can help to lower that level.
Will the pond stay stable?
A regular addition of "Starter Bacteria" during the warmer months of the year combined with a sufficient lime content of the water will ensure great plant growth and little algae. The pond is then in a stable condition.
Tip:
Recommend the biological sludge reduction "Silt Remover" plus "Oxygen Stabiliser" to customers who complain about silt in their pond but cannot use a pond vacuum cleaner. These products constitute great means of rehabilitation if the water depth is declining due to an increasing amount of silt at the bottom of the pond. Equally important is additional aeration and vertical water movement with suitable pumps and aeration devices by day and night. |

Bacto Plus LM: 10 litres treats up to 250,000 litres of pond or lake water |
 |
A biological self cleaner for blocking algae and improving water quality. Bacto Plus LM has been especially formulated for large ponds and lakes and is a natural treatment comprising micro-organisms and valuable growth promoters. When used in combination with the Oase Aqua Air 250 LM Aerator, the additional oxygen supply helps the Bacto Plus cultures acheive a particularly good and sustainable effect in all natural and artificial shallow bodies of water. High nutrient input is compensated and algae growth is inhibited. Use Bacto Plus LM to prevent imbalance and restore the natural regenerative power of the water in a short period of time.

Tap Water Dechlorinator System |
 |
Highly efficient 12" In-line cartridge designed specifically to extract Chlorine, Chloramine and numerous other potentially harmful toxins found in tap water. Chlorinated tap water is potentially harmful to fish stock and will also inhibit growth of beneficial bacteria within all pond filtration systems, during the first fill of the pond and subsequent topping up. The cartridge is simple to install onto an existing hosepipe, using the supplied hose connectors. The Dechlorinator cartridge will process up to 150,000 Litres (33,000 Gals) before simple replacement is required. The recommended flow rate through the dechlorinator filter cartridge is 9L/minute, for optimum toxin removal. |
