Weed (string algae) Control

String algae, otherwise known as blanket weed or filamentous algae, develops if the natural competitors for nutrients, the water plants, are missing from a pond, or are lacking in variety. String algae can spread very rapidly and it is often found in moving water such as water courses, rock fountains etc. You can try to 'weed out' the string algae but if you would like to clear the pond completely try "String algae control". The algae will disappear even quicker if additional means are applied such as stabilising the water, adding pond plants, particularly floating plants and so-called oxidising plants. For a successful treatment with "String algae control" the water hardness must be increased to at least 5° dKH with the help of "Hardness plus". (Test the water!!) "String algae control" works particularly well during the vegetation period. You can often see string algae appear already in early spring when the water is still cold but clear.

Phosless is a natural product which reduces algae growth by binding excess phosphates. Twin tube set fits Biotec 18 and 36 filters , the Proficlear Phosphate Binder Module or can be placed directly in moving water (i.e. filter or watercourse outflow).Supplied as a combination pack including one Phosless CA media tube and one Phosless FS media tube.Phosless CA is a white, porous calcium mineral for binding phosphates and heavy metals (such as copper and lead).Phosless FS is a brown, grainy iron mineral which effectively binds phosphates and sulphide.Particularly useful during warm or summer months. For effective nutrient withdrawal and green and string algae prevention, Phosless LM is supplied in a combination pack with one bag of Phosless CA and one of Phosless FS. The use of two different materials is ideal because the binding mechanisms for phosphate are extremely complex and they can be prevented by competing reactions with other ions, low oxygen content or low PH values. The contents of the bag can be introduced wherever it can be carried away by moving water - we recommend introducing Phosless LM in the flow area of the Aqua Air 250 LM Aerator for maximum efficiency. |

Professional tip:
Phosphate in pond water favours string algae growth. Phosless filter media tubes counteract these conditions. They bond significant amounts of phosphate. Phosless filter media tubes can be integrated in Biotec filters, and Phosless inserts are included in a special Proficlear filter module. Phosphate bonding is also ensured if you simply place filter media tubes in areas of the pond where there is stronger water flow. |
