Especially in the first few months after filling or refilling a pond, increased algae growth occurs parallel to poor plant growth. Aquatic plants are yet to become fully established. Missing trace elements (iron, calcium) lead to a yellow colouring of the pond plants and a high pH-value causes increased development of 'slimy' and short thread algae as well as 'blue' algae. Rising lack of carbonic acid, caused by the algae, increases the pH-value further.
Without intervention, plant growth declines whilst algae growth increases, suffocating the remaining plants. A pH-value higher than 8.6 stops the respiration process of the plants; a further rise of the pH-value could cause fish to die due to ammonia poisoning.
After every refilling of the pond, after every change of water and after continuous rainfalls, "Starter Bacteria" should be used to supply vital, active micro-organisms to 'sterile' new water and to reactivate the regenerative powers of the pond.

	A biological self cleaner for blocking algae and improving water quality Ground Clear LM has been especially developed for large ponds and lakes and is a cultured, high performance bacteria that efficiently and sustainably reduces the pond, or lake, floor silt. The natural micro-organisms and growth promoters generate a so-called turbo effect, and are thus able to quickly break down large quantities of silt and dead biomass. Organic components are broken down into carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water. A pre-requisite for high level bacteria efficiency is an adequate oxygen supply and stirring up the silt in the water and the Oase Aqua Air 250 LM Aerator is particularly suited for this task.
