What are the correct pond water parameters? - FAQ

What are the correct pond water parameters?

Pond water quality is an important criteria in managing a healthy eco-system for your fish, plants and resident wildlife.  The water chemistry should be measured and tested for the main water parameters on a regular basis, so you can determine and address any fundamental fluctuations before they become an issue.

Main Pond Parameters Checklist:

ParameterIdeal RangeNotes
Oxygen (O₂)≥6.0 mg/LVital for fish and aerobic bacteria
pH7.5 – 8.5Stability is crucial; avoid sudden shifts
KH95 – 150 ppm (3–6 dKH)Buffers pH and supports biofiltration
GH3 – 15 dGHGeneral hardness (minerals like calcium & magnesium)
Ammonia (NH₃)0 – 0.5 ppmMore toxic at high pH levels
Nitrite (NO₂⁻)<0.5 ppmHighly toxic; should be near zero
Nitrate (NO₃⁻)<25 ppmLess harmful but still stressful at high levels
Phosphate (PO₄)~0.05 ppmControls algae growth
