What is a Pond UV Clarifier?

A pond UV Clarifier is an electrical device which produces Ultraviolet radiation.  When pond water is passed through the UV Clarifier, single-celled organisms, algae and bacteria are killed by the radiation, disrupting their cellular structure.  The algae flocculates (clumps together) and the clumped algae is then usually passed to a filter where it is trapped and biologically broken down.  Green pond water caused by suspended algae is therefore eliminated or greatly reduced.

It’s always recommended to fit a pond filter, usual after, the UV clarifier.  Without a means of trapping the flocculated algae, this would simply pass back into the pond and become the next nutrient source for further algal bloom.  The filter usually contains screens or foams which trap the debris and these sponges also act as housing for ‘good’ bacteria to thrive on, which will then break down the organic matter naturally.

Many pond filters are supplied with a UV Clarifier, usually as part of a packaged set or actually built into the filter itself.
