What is a Pondless Waterfall? - FAQ

What is a Pondless Waterfall?

Pondless Waterfalls consist of a recirculating, decorative water stream positioned in a garden or landscape and the water source is usually hidden underground and covered from view.  One of the main advantages of a pondless waterfall is the safety aspect for children and pets as there is no deep water exposed.  Pondless water features also benefit from less maintenance than an open pond exposed to sunlight.

Pondless Waterfalls

Pond-free streams, cascades and waterfalls usually require the following equipment and materials:

  • A reservoir or rubber pond liner (to contain the water underground)
  • Stream liner (to create and seal the flowing channel of water)
  • Support grid or crates (to safely cover the internals of the underground reservoir of water)
  • Submersible pump (hidden in the lower water reservoir at the base of the waterfall)
  • Flexible pond hose (to pass the pumped water to the top of the stream or waterfall)
  • Pebbles or decorative aggregate (to cover the grid and dress the stream).

Simple or very elaborate shapes can be formed to create stunning, natural looking water features.  The pump can be selected to offer flow rates from a trickling babbling brook to a veritable torrent.
