What is a 'Water Blade'? - FAQ

What is a 'Water Blade'?

Water Blades have become incredibly popular in ponds and gardens but are also drawing the attention of architects, landscapers and garden designers as a means of creating a stunning focal point and to drown out road traffic noise.  But, what actually IS a Water Blade?

A water blade usually consist of a special wall mounted box with a ‘blade’ shaped front lip.  Water is then pumped up to the box which causes the water to spread and spill out in a wide sheet.  Higher quality water blades contain a bank of baffle plates hidden inside the box and this causes the water spread out much more effectively so when the water escapes, the falling sheet is ‘laminar’ and tranquilised.

Water blades are normally constructed from stainless steel but other materials such as copper and plastics are also used.  The box part itself can be hidden inside of a brick or block wall to disguise, with just the front lip protruding and visible.  The pump is usually sited underwater in a pond or water container and the water then recycles, meaning no need for a mains water connection.
