PROFESSIONAL AQUA TEST BOX: TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Ponds and aquaria have to contend with many problems and the key to the solution is in the water. The water has a direct influence on the growth of water plants, the development of micro-organisms and the health of fish and aquatic animals. If all the water values are correct and the micro life functions optimally, the pond eco-system will achieve a healthy biological equlibrium. However the biological equibrium is subject to many internal and external influences such as rotting plants and fish food, fish waste, rainwater, leaves and dust etc. These will constantly change the balance in the pond and should be regularly monitored to maintain a healthy pond. If the essential water values are known you can resolve or, even better, prevent problems. The Professional Aqua Test Box contains nine vital water tests that can be determined quickly and accurately.
PROFESSIONAL AQUA TESTBOX:

The Professional Aqua Test Box includes the following: -

  • 2 graduated beakers
  • 20 test bottles
  • 9 colour charts with comparator
  • Dosing syringe
  • Spatula
  • Computer Pond Test with analysis, diagnostics and recommended solutions

The NINE individual tests include the following: -

GH Total Hardness is determined by dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. Ahealthy and stable water environment has a GH value ranging between 8° and 12°. Too low valuation will slow down plant growth and may cause acidification.

KH Carbonate Hardness is the acid binding capacity of water and is important for plant growtyh. A healthy and stable water environment will have KH value ranging between 6° and 8°. A lower value indicates acidification of the water.

PH value indicates the acidity of the water and is determined by its carbonate hardness KH and carbonic acid. It is also a valuable indicator of the functioning of micro-organisms. A value ranging between PH 7 and 8 is ideal for your pond or aquarium; higher or lower values should be corrected without delay.

PO4 Phosphate Content is an essential trace element that plants need for growth. Ideally the phoshate content will fluctuate between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l. If water plants are not able to consume all the phosphate, a surplus will form and algae will begin to develop and the water quality will deterioate.

Fe Iron Content is another essential trace element which stimulates plant growth. For optimum growth and proper development of leaves, plants need iron. An average content of 0.6 to 1 mg/l will avoid iron chlorosis and yellow leaves

Cu Copper Content is another trace element and important nutrient for organisms in ponds and aquaria. The tolerance of fish to copper is generally high, however spawn are more sensitive than young and fully grown specimens. Copper concentrations of up to 0.3 mg/l are acceptable, at 4mg/l + action will be required.

NO2 Nitrite Content is a dangerous component of the nitrifying process, which requires oxygen rich conditions. High nitrite levels will occur when there is insufficient nirtifying bacteria available to decompose the nitrite into harmless nitrate. The nitrite content should be kept to below 0.2 mg/l.

NO3 Nitrate Content is a nutrient that is consumed by plants and algae, if the water environment is polluted and with high fish stock and insufficient plant growth, nitrate content will increase and algae will begin to flourish. The nitrite content should be kept to below 2 mg/l.

NH3 Ammonia / NH4 Ammonium Content are always in proportion to each other and this is determined by the PH value; ammonia will increase with a rising PH value. Ammonium is relativey harmless, however ammonia levels above 0.2 mg/l are fatal for spawn; and above 0.8 mg/l fatal for all fish
