Flow-through pond filters come in many different designs, but all operate in the same way, being pump fed on the inlet side, usually via a submersible pump in the pond, and returning filtered water to the pond by gravity, through an overflow return outlet. Flow-through pond filters typically come in the form of a box, filled with filter media, usually sponges and occasionally with supplemental ceramic or rock media too. Some flow-through filters are very simple in design, whereas some have modern technical features such as mechanical screens and pull handles for easier cleaning. Flow-through filters can contain integrated UV lights, or be connected to an inline ultraviolet clarifier on the inlet pipe. As flow-through filters return water by gravity, the water cannot be returned at a level higher than the filter outlet, meaning the whole filter box must be elevated to the required water return level. These are some of the most economical and energy efficient filter systems.
