Types of Streams and Waterfalls

There are two main approaches for introducing a stream or waterfall to your outdoor space, either buy something readymade, or construct a watercourse yourself.

A preformed watercourse manufactured from lightweight polyresin offers the look of naturalised slate and allows for a simpler installation, but limits the possibility for creativity, whereas a pondless waterfall kit provides the fundamental components of the watercourse, but leaves the design, stone type and arrangement up to you. A pondless waterfall does however require more labour to install, especially the larger streams that require more stored water below ground. Both methods involve the same basic priciples - underground water storage at the bottom of the stream and a pump installed in the water reservoir moving water to the top of the watercourse via a length of flexible hose. The major difference is the option to design, sculpt and finish your own water feature, using flexible liner to retain water in the designated stream channel, or opting for a prefabricated stream section manufactured and finished to replicate real slate. Water Garden provide options for both approaches to watercourses with a range of premade and do it yourself kits.

Pondless Waterfall Sets (Do it Yourself Kits)

Pondless Waterfall Sets are complete kits for custom-built streams and watercourses, available in different lengths and widths, from small, narrow streams that require little flow and water containment, to longer, wider watercourses that require a greater flow rate and more water stored in an underground water block system. Our Pondless waterfall sets provide all of the components required to arrange your own bespoke stream or watercourse using real rock to dress around the construction materials. Pondless Waterfalls generally have no visible pond or open body of water, with the visible water in constant motion - appearing at the head of the stream, descending the watercourse, and disappearing into the ground at the bottom. As the directional flow of water requires the head of the waterfall to be higher than the point at which it returns to the ground, it helps if there is preexisting embankment to form the stream section into, as this provides a natural decline for water to descend back to the reservoir. If there is no natural bank to work with, an artificial mound or hill can be created to achieve the necessary fall, perhaps using excavated soil from the reservoir area to build up the stream bank. All of the components that make up these kits are especially selected to be optimal for the stream being produced. Pondless Waterfall sets are all supplied with a waterfall pump, a waterfall header box, a flexible EPDM liner, heavy duty protective underlay, flexible hose pipe and hose clips, a flow regulating valve, a water reservoir and grid (or a pump vault and water block system with additional liner and underlay in the case of the larger sets), black sealant for liner bonding, and waterfall expanding foam for gap filling.

Faux-Slate Watercourses (Ready-Built)

Faux-Slate cascading watercourses are made from realistic looking polyurethane resin. These offer the look of real naturalised grey slate, but are far lighter in weight, making installation a more manageable and less expensive process. These do however limit the possibilities when it comes to the size, shape and scale of the watercourse, as the product you use is readymade and not adaptable. These water features can be supplied as the stream sections only, which is ideal if the product is being installed over an existing pond or water reservoir, or as complete kits with a waterfall pump, flexible hose pipe and hose clips, and a water reservoir with steel grid for a ‘pondless’ installation. The complete kit is required if there is no pond or existing water feature reservoir to pump from and return water to. These watercourses should be positioned at a slight declining angle to assist the directional flow of water. The underside of the stream parts made need propping up with bricks to elevate the back end, facilitate the angle and provide support to the piece. The flexible hose runs from the pump, all the way to the top of the feature where it connects to a hose tail situated beneath, or at the rear of the upper section of the stream. The hose can be routed beneath the resin feature to disguise it from view. If a water reservoir is used, this is usually buried directly beneath the lowest drop of the stream to collect all of the water falling from the end of the last cascade point.
