Plug & Play Concept

Simple, safe, neat and flexible outdoor illumination.

The concept of Plug & Play is to create flexible, adaptable outdoor lighting circuits using safe low voltage LED lights and cables with simple push fit weatherproof 2 pin connections. This concept is designed for anybody to be able to install in their garden without the need for costly professional electrical installations. The system uses only 12 volt cables which do not require protecting in the way that mains voltage power cable does. The plug & play lighting concept allows for the system to be extended to span good distances and connect multiple LED lights, all powered via a single weatherproof transformer. Here is how to build your plug & play outdoor lighting system.

  1. Pick LED lights and work out total watts (w).

To build a plug & play lighting system, first you need to select which plug & play compatible LED lights you will be using, and how many individual lights you will use. This will determine the total watts of your lighting system. All of our plug & play LED lights have the number of watts (w) in the product title for easy reference (e.g. 2w = 2 watts). You can draw a plan of your outdoor space to assist with working out the number of lights you will need to install. A plan drawing will also assist when it comes to working out the required cabling accessories. There are multiple sizes, styles and colours of 12 volt LED light compatible with plug & play, any of which can be combined on the same circuit to illuminate different areas and produce different illumination effects.

  1. Pick a transformer based on the total watts.

Once you know the combined watts of all of your LED lights, you can then select a weatherproof transformer that is rated high enough to support all the lights you need to power. Always ensure that the transformer is rated least a few watts over the maximum calculated watts of the LED lights to ensure that the transformer is not overloaded. If you think you might want to expand your lighting system with more LED lights later on, consider this when selecting your transformer so that this is still suitable for powering the system with additional LED lights introduced. The transformer is the only component of the system that requires mains power, and it is this that steps the voltage down to 12 volts for the rest of the lighting system.

  1. Select your cables and cable accessories.

Finally, you need to choose your low voltage cables and accessories to create enough lighting outlets to connect all of your LED lights and enough length to reach all of the LED lights in their place of installation. There are various ways and means of arranging a cable system, with cables of different lengths available to customise your system. Light outlets and junctions can be incorporated with T parts and multi-outlet splitters. Every cable and cable accessory will connect to any other plug & play LED light or cable accessory in any configuration you choose, so there are limitless possibilities when it comes to arranging a plug & play LED lighting circuit.

  1. Introduce a control accessory if desired.

Additional accessories such as daylight sensors can be introduced to switch the LED lights on at dusk and off at dawn. If installed right after the transformer, the accessory will control the entire lighting system. If installed further down the circuit, the control accessory will only control LED lights that are after this device in the circuit. This is useful if you only wish to automate certain lights within the lighing system. Multiple control assessories can be installed on the same circuit to isolate and control different zones and lights.

Once connected, the low voltage plug & play cables can be buried in amongst outdoor aggregates such as soil or gravel, tucked alongside the edge of planting borders, or trenched just under the surface of lawns to hide these.
