What replacement pond pump do I need? - FAQ

What replacement pond pump do I need?

Assuming you’ve run through all of the checks on our FAQ “My pond pump has stopped working – what’s wrong?” and are still having issues, it’s likely the pump is beyond repair and you may need to purchase a new one.  It’s highly likely we have a replacement pump for your application and it’s also likely that this will carry a longer guarantee and cost less to run, as technology has progressed in leaps and bounds.  The question you may be asking yourself is – how do I know which pump will replace my old one?

Firstly, you will need to remove the old pump from the pond and give it a good wipe over.  Most pumps will have an identification badge which will tell us everything we need to know to select the most suitable replacement.  Let’s look at what the identification badge details mean.

  1. This is the ‘brand (i.e. the manufacturer of the pump).  You don’t necessarily need to go for the same brand as your existing pump, so we can look at choosing the best balance of price Vs performance Vs running costs.
  2. This is the ‘model’ number (usually one of several pumps in a family, so again, this is very useful information).
  3. ‘Q Max’ refers to the maximum amount of water flow the pump will produce (in this instance, 36,000 Litres/Hour).
  4. ‘H Max’ refers to the maximum ‘head’ or vertical lift it can pump up to.  If you imagine a transparent hose connected and held upwards – this particular pump would lift the water up to 9 metres high.  Important to note that at 9 metres, the flow would reduce to zero (as flow will reduce as you pump water uphill).
  5. ‘P Max’ refers to the maximum power consumption consumed by the pump (in this case, 540 watts).

Armed with this information, we can easily select the correct replacement Pond Pump for you.  If you are struggling to find the information, feel free to email or call us as we can run through some questions to help advise on a replacement.
