  • Leaf debris can leach tannins into your pond water as they start to decompose.  This can discolour the water brown (similar to a teabag in a cup of water).  As tannins are mixed in solution ('staining' the water, rather than consisting of particles of debris), this cannot be removed mechanically (i.e. by filter foams or via a UV clarifier).

Activated carbon will help absorb tannins when this is placed in the flow of water (in the outlet of a stream or inside a pond filter).  The activated charcoal will also help to ‘polish’ the water in aquariums and ponds, to add an extra level of clarity by removing fine particles and dust.

It is advised to use silt removal treatments to help reduce the sediment build-up, which is likely causing the release of the tannins. Pond cover nets will also help to reduce sinking leaf debris during the autumn and winter months.

    • 5000ml treatment - Treats approx. 5000 Litres of pond water.

Description

Our Activated Carbon Filter Media is a highly porous and absorbent material that is designed to remove harmful and undesirable substances from pond water.  The Activated Carbon Filter Media contains a complex and very large internal surface area that allows for optimal absorption.

Pond filters work best when several types of filtration media are used in conjunction with one another, Activated Carbon Filter Media should be the final stage of filtration in your system.

To use correctly fill the included fine mesh net with media, rinse well with water then place the bag into your pond filter.

How to test for Tannins?

Firstly, take a sample of the pond water, ideally in a clean glass vessel such as a pint glass.  Place the glass on a window sill and leave this to settle (we suggest 12-24 hours).

  • If the water slowly clears but leaves brown debris at the bottom of the glass, this is likely dead or dying algae and/or organic material which should be possible to extract using a suitable pond filter.
  • If the water remains stained brown, this is likely due to tannins leaching into the water so activated carbon is likely the best method to reduce this issue, alongside a sludge digesting treatment.
