Spillways are fixed waterfall outlets designed to facilitate the spread of water at the head of a stream, or provide a designated passage for tranquilised overflow from a higher pond into a lower pond.
These can be entirely driven by gravity in the case of overflowing spillways (for example, one or multiple stainless steel spillways transferring water between ponds at different levels), or directly pump fed if the spillway has a connection for attaching a hose (for example, using a single WaterCourse Spring spillway to distribute water at the head of a stream or 'Pondless Waterfall' feature).
Spillways require a certain minimum flow rate to produce the desired spread of water, the flow rate can be estimated based on the width of the spillway. If the spillway is enclosed, or has high side walls, a considerable flow rate can usually be accommodated through a spillway if more rapid flow is desired.
